We implemented GoMembers (formerly Computility) in 2010. At that time, the company was very easy to work with and they were able to fulfill our customization needs. The training we received in the beginning was adequate. We liked the implementation trainer and he was very patient and helpful.

We've only requested the addition of one new feature during our relationship and it was done quickly and didn't cost an arm and a leg.

We only use a few of the AMS' features and that is mostly our fault. We are a two person staff and just haven't devoted time to researching all the features and using them.

The software company has changed names over the years. Sometimes we knew about a merger or sale but mostly we didn't. Poor communications is definitely my biggest complaint with Aptean. They rarely communicate with their users (unless it is renewal time). We aren't informed of upgrades or changes to the system. I usually find out about changes when I try to use a feature that I routinely use and find out it has changed. Generating reports is a clunky process. It used to be easy and now it's not. 

I don't believe the changes that I have discovered on my own have been improvements and I would like to know the rationale behind them. Have I asked? I haven't because I've been so frustrated. And, I believe that THEY should be telling US what's going on.

We contacted our account manager at Aptean several years ago when we decided to update our website. We sent him an RFP and we never received a response. Very disheartening.

I don't think GoMembers is a terrible product. As I said earlier, it is clunky. I don't think the processes are all that intuitive (parent/child relationships) and what should be simple functions (generating reports) are made difficult.

UPDATE: The NEW name is Avolin. The AMS gets less user friendly with each name change/upgrade; we are only using it for mailing lists and reports.

Great solution for Small Association

My staff loves goMembers and Connect. It allows us to access and work from anywhere. We have not had technical or software problems. We don't currently use the event capabilities but they seem great. Sometimes it is hard to get someone to speak with you in person, but I see they are getting better. We are considering going with them to host and redesign our website. Then the members only side will be identical to the login for membership and events.

Starting with the positives - We're a long time customer and the staff and support team at Aptean/GoMembers are terrific. They're quick to resolve issues, and have a long track record of great customer service with us. That said their product (Q/GoMembers) only gets a "C" rating from our staff here. It's an evolution of an old established A+ AMS from the late 90's with a .Net web interface deployed on top of the legacy schema. Not a bad approach as it took advantage of the mature schema of the old system, but their inability to quickly mature the product to the latest WebUI standards is glaring. To this day the latest product they install is not entirely web enabled. In many modules old windows style pop-up screens still appear for the back office staff. Over a decade now and the product transition is still not 100% done - signs of being resource constrained for sure. The buyout several years ago by Aptean did not help with the development speed. Layoffs/streamlining of staff led to a lag in development schedules. Only in the past year have we seen any real progress in the UI evolution. So I'd consider them a risky play if I was looking for a new AMS vendor. If they're a fit for you after seeing the demo I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the team, but the product usability simply doesn't come close to some of the newer entrants on the market.

GoMembers is good for basic database needs. We have recently tried to integrate with on online community but we were unable to do so due to incompatibility on both sides. Pulling reports becomes confusing and exhausting due to how each activity is attached to a member.

Based on costs of other systems, Aptean provides a product that works. It is important to be verify thorough on the front end in how you set the system up as it is not easy to make adjustments

GoMembers was a great step up from our original AMS. GoMembers has a well-designed database that tracks historical, current, and future memberships. Among many of GoMembersÕ features, the staff uses the committee module to track the Boards of Directors at the National level, as well as the Chapter level. We were able to offer greatly improved member self-service with more renewal choices, and, as a result, increase staff productivity. The problem with GoMembers is that it is expensive to implement changes to the system. The customer can make some configuration changes, but only Aptean can add new objects to track new data. The root cause of this limitation is Progress. Progress is the name of the middleware on which GoMembers was built. It is a proprietary programming platform and limits the capabilities of the customer to integrate with other systems and add new objects. Progress also has a user interface component on which many of the software features critical to our organization reside. The UI is not available in browsers, so we are forced to use the full client on either a desktop or a connection to our Terminal Server via RDP. This is an inconvenience when travelling to events. Customizations to the system are expensive in two ways: development, and ongoing maintenance. The estimates that Aptean provide have largely been accurate to the final implementation cost. In addition to the development cost the customer must pay an annual fee equal to a percentage of the implementation cost. Our organization needed to make many customizations to meet member and staff needs. As a result we pay a very high annual fee. My impression of GoMembers after being a customer for five years is that it was not designed to be easily customized. An association must constantly evolve and provide new services to members. An AMS must be adaptable to provide or interface with those services. Unfortunately, GoMembers is not adaptable without high cost.

Customer service with GoMembers has always been good. They've been quick to respond to our questions and requests. That being said, we've struggled to implement parts of the system. The interface is not at all intuitive. There are scroll bars that don't scroll, for instance. Our members are not at all comfortable with the flow of the registration software. They must navigate through many unnecessary screens before they can even begin to register for an event. Overall the event registration process seems woefully out-of-date. At one point we tried to use a "shopping cart" component to sell our books. While we did successfully use this component, it took us well over a year to actually set up 50 books into the system and we continued to experience odd "buggy" behavior, like addresses not printing on invoices. We have customized the system, and overall that process went smoothly; however, what we didn't realize going in was that these customizations would effect how easily the AMS could transition through an upgrade. These customizations resulted in hidden costs during the upgrade process.

DMG4 is a legacy system that we've run for the past 12 years. It has served its purpose but can't handle integrations with other systems and does not have any account management features.

Too many changes in ownership causes loss of focus and support.

Long time user from the early days, (remember DOS?) which means we are pretty much stuck in our ways. We had a level of support and one on one relations with AMS staff that after the last three corporate changes (acquisitions) and all the realignment of support and R&D, our expectations are not being met. Licensing fees and support agreements have gotten out of hand and with new AMS business models being provided by competitors, doing business like we used to is killing this company. That and costly upgrade paths has made us seriously consider leaving this long time relationship. As far as the actual AMS it does what we need from a transaction stand point and allows us to run our organization. Our current version has limited capabilities when it comes to any type of CRM and the reporting is very limited and technically challenging (you need a DB expert to get meaningful reports). That being said I hear the newest versions (which are too costly for us to upgrade) is suppose to eliminate some of these challenges. This company is soon to be left in the dust if they don't start paying attention to their competitors and how the change to the landscape of new and exciting AMS companies. The future looks bright for those companies incorporating CRM into the traditional AMS. Associations are expecting more BI from their core operating software and the business of Associations will profit and expand with those companies that provide such data in an easy to digest form. Sadly this company does not appear to be going that direction.

Customer service: WeÕve had many issues with customer service. Trouble tickets get closed without being resolved or fall into the abyss until we repeatedly prompt for status. TheyÕve made several promises to correct the situation but we never really saw a major change. Reliability: The system requires often starting/stopping of services or server reboots. Would not call this a stable install. Clients are slow. Ease of use: The only thing I have to compare it to is the A+ system before GoMembers went to a browser-based .NET environment, and I saw a significant drop in usability. Lost the ability to quickly move through work flows, now have to click links, wait for it to save, etcÉ Customization: We have added sever customizations to the product, which is common with AMS systems. They are an issue when upgrading, also common across all AMS systems. Expensive.
